Lady Hunsdon's Puffe, Almain, P.54Genre: Solo Chamber
Pr. Instrument: Lute
Amid the gloom and doom of the vast majority of the music of John Dowland (1563-1626), there are the occasional works of lightness and even whimsy. Among these trifles is Lady Hunsdon's Almain, also known as Lady Hunsdon's Puffe, a very brief and very delightful work of less than two minutes' duration. Set in binary form with lively outer sections in the rhythm of an almain and a closing section with a more march-like rhythm, Dowland's Lady Hunsdon's Almain remains a charming work by this most doleful of composers.
