This Pavane in the Venetian Style was published in 1508 by the noted music publisher Petrucci, in a volume dedicated solely to Dalza's compositions. Dalza is well-known for his transcriptions of frottolas, such as works by Cara and Tromboncino, and this pavane shows many of the same aesthetic goals, grace, melodiousness, and a certain worldliness. A pavane is a generally slow dance taken at a walking pace and consisting of relatively few moves. It was often used as a type of processional dance, and always used to show off the dancers' grace and rich dress and ornaments. One can imagine the line of ladies and gentlemen of the court entering the hall, fingertips barely touching, and each making sure he or she sees and is seen and admired by the others! This particular pavane is in 2/4 time, with a clear but unobtrusive rhythm, with repeated descending passages punctuated by chords. It beautifully evokes the refined, graceful, and rather narcissistic atmosphere of the court dances it was composed for.
