Some of Henry VIII's compositions cast unexpected lights on his

tastes and perhaps even his personality—this song, which could be

summarized as "kings just want to have fun, " is a clear reflection

of the personality we most frequently associate with the king—

pleasure-loving and determined in his pursuit of pleasure.

The music is direct and appropriately carefree, even rather boisterous.

The rhythms, with their occasional slight irregularity, and the steady

lilt of the melody seem to make it quite clear that this is a policy

statement, not just a song!

Pastime with good company, I love and shall until I die. Gruch (grumble)

who lust (wishes to), but none deny. So God be pleased, thus live will I.

For my pastance (passtimes), hunt, sing and dance. My heart is set,

all goodly sport, for my comfort. Who shall me let (hinder?" The verses

continue in this vein, with the same rather swaggering music.
