Musicology:
This is essentially a mini-concerto for two pianists and orchestra. It is based on four tunes from the northerly half of the island of Great Britain, often employing the well-known "Scottish snap, " a well-known feature of much Scots music employing a short note on the beat followed by an unaccented longer one off the beat.

Scottish Ballad, for 2 pianos and orchestra, Op.26Year: 1941
Pr. Instruments: Piano & Orchestra
I must report that this 15-minute work does not make a strong impression, although it is full of energy and attractive high spirits. It is, however, too short to take the position of a concerto on a symphony program. If you go out and hire two pianists to play a piece on your orchestra's program, you're apt to demand something of greater dimensions, like the Mozart or Poulenc concertos. Not this piece, which is not especially deep in feeling.
