Musicology:
  • Sonata in F- for 2 Pianos, Op.34b
    Key: F-
    Year: 1864
    Genre: Sonata
    Pr. Instrument: Piano Duo
    • 1.Allegro non troppo
    • 2.Andante, un poco adagio
    • 3.Scherzo: Allegro. Trio
    • 4.Finale: Poco sostenuto. Allegro non troppo
This is the original scoring of what was eventually to become the Piano Quintet Opus 34 in F minor. Identical in almost every detail, this version is equally effective as the final one. In fact, much of the string writing in the Quintet is somewhat awkward having originally been conceived for the piano. In four movements, this work is generally considered the fruition of Brahms' entire early period. It is full of the romantic passion and vigor of the early works, yet demonstrates the complete mastery and control of form and effect that Brahms achieved later on in his output.
