Emblems, completed in 1964, was Aaron Copland's first work for band. It was premiered at the College Band Directors' National Association convention that year by the University of Southern California Band. The work has a three-part slow-fast-slow form; the first part returns at the end in a bit of a variation. Passages in the work resemble the hymn "Amazing Grace" and the Shaker hymn "Gift to be Simple," from Copland's own Appalachian Spring, but the harmonies of the piece were conceived first; it was only later that Copland realized the similarity to "Amazing Grace." Emblems has become a staple of band literature, and deserves serious attention.
