Musicology:
  • Gavotte for 3 Violins and Cello
    Genre: Other Chamber
    Pr. Instrument: Violin
This composition was discovered among Kodály's papers after his death. It existed in two forms: A fragmentary version on two staves looking like piano music, and a complete version on two staves with one labeled "cello" and the other marked "three violins." This is an odd ensemble on its face, but is really a string quartet where the violist plays a violin (as violists are capable of doing).

There is no clue as to when or why it was written. It is an attractive two and a half minute dance movement lasting less than three minutes.
