This work is a touching and intriguing setting of verses from Second Samuel dealing with David's lament for the death of his son Absalom. Uncharacteristically for laments like this the music holds forth in the major mode, and open fifths at key points in the harmony emphasize a feeling of emptiness. The music respectfully and poignantly projects David's sorrow without becoming overwhelming.
