  • Herr Christ der einig Gottes Sohn, BuxWV191
    Key: G
    Genre: Prelude / Fugue
    Pr. Instrument: Organ (Baroque)

This prelude sets an Epiphany chorale. The text reads as follows, "Lord Jesus Christ the only son of God the Father in all eternity, sprouted from his heart as it is written, He is the morning star, his sparkle reaches out far beyond the other stars." Two preludes on this chorale by Buxtehude remain extant, and this one includes the most florid ornamentation of the two. The flourish at the beginning of the line, "sprouted from his heart," is particularly notable, spanning nearly two octaves painting a picture of something expanding into a broad existence. Also during this line of the chorale, accompanying voices are just as florid as the melody voice.
