  • Herr Jesu Christ, ich weiss gar wohl, BuxWV193
    Key: A-
    Genre: Prelude / Fugue
    Pr. Instrument: Organ (Baroque)

This chorale prelude has the chorale melody in the soprano with embellishment. The chorale deals with the subject of faith in an afterlife. The first verse reads as follows, "Lord Jesus Christ I truly know, that one day I must die: When that will finally happen and the way may body will rot to dust I don't really know, only that I will stand at your judgment seat and you will see my final judgment." The embellishment of the chorale is slow-moving and elegant. Buxtehude also mixes some chromaticism into the accompanying voices, a gesture that was often associated with the topic of death in seventeenth and eighteenth century music.
