All in a garden green, MB56Genre: Variations
Pr. Instrument: Keyboard
The renaissance English composer William Byrd (1543-1623) wrote a set of six variations on All in a Garden Green. Although included in My Lady Nevell's Book of 1591, a slight hesitancy in the writing suggest an earlier date for this work.
Generally, though, this is a well-executed work. His adoption of a fixed harmonic setting relieves the necessity to vary the harmony, and Byrd, instead, allows the polyphony free rein to flourish, which it does, albeit a touch unevenly. The melody, too, is continuously and strongly embellished. These variations are an example of a strong composition from a talented and promising young composer.
