Belisario was one of the first texts written by Salvadore Cammarano, when he was a budding young literary talent, hoping to get into the field of libretto writing. For a long time, he was hired as a scene painter, among other things, and his skill with verse left largely unrecognized. But he was Donizetti's favorite librettist. Donizetti preferred working with Cammarano even to the highly acclaimed and popular Felice Romani. Cammarano's collaborations with Donizetti included Lucia di Lammermmoor, Poliuto, and L'Assedio di Calais, among others. Donizetti liked Cammarano's brevity, his energetic scenic construction, and his fine sense of theatrics. When Donizetti contracted in 1835 with the Teatro Fenice in Venice to compose an opera, he was given Cammarano's libretto and the two worked closely turning it into a dramatically successful opera. The premiere was held on February 4, 1836 to critical and popular acclaim. The first run lasted twenty-eight performances, and the opera remained popular throughout the nineteenth century. There is no love interest in the plot, but the many spectacular scenes, vigorous choruses, and the charismatic music helped keep Belisario popular with the public along time. It is said that the Venetians were so moved by this opera that they escorted Donizetti home after the third performance with a torchlight procession and a military band playing a fanfare. Belisario was also frequently performed in Germany in the nineteenth century.
