  • Distribuiçao de flôres ('Distribution of Flowers'), for flute and guitar, A.381
    Year: 1937
    Genre: Other Chamber
    Pr. Instruments: Flute & Guitar
Who is distributing flowers, or why, is not explained in the printed score,

but the music has a potent sense of ancient ritual, with the melodic

chant of the flute floating above fast, throbbing repeated chords played

"battente" (the hand, not just the fingers, striking across all six strings and sounding

like a distant drum). After a short, mysterious interlude for solo guitar

the thobbing, battente returns, winding down to pianissimo, a slow flute

arpeggio ... and silence. The effect is that of a pagan ceremony,

all the more powerful and strange for being unlike the lightweight music

usually assigned to the combination of flute and guitar.
