Genre: Suite / Partita
Pr. Instrument: Piano
- 1.Prélude: Grave
- 2.Fugue: Allegro moderato
- 3.Adagio
- 4.Finale: Presto
More popularly known by its subtitle "Suite dans le style ancien", this piano work was dedicated to Mademoiselle Murer, who gave it its first performance in Paris in 1897 and had also been the pianist at the première of the Piano Quintet the previous year. It has been described by more than one Enescu biographer as a deliberate exercise in the archaic and is redolent of the styles of Bach, Couperin, Handel and Scarlatti, among others. The second movement, for example, is basically a three-part fugue in the style of Bach, while the Adagio third movement could have been written for organ by Bach or Buxtehude.
