Nocturne This piece presents something of a problem to those Enescu scholars who insist on calling it the Third Piano Suite. From a purely musical point of view it is less a suite than a series of independent pieces written over a three-year period and with no discernible link. Enescu believed the score to have been lost and it was not till after his death that the existence of the pieces was suspected, and their first performance was not till 1959. This is some of the composer's most restful and contemplative music, certainly untroubled by the incipient war which figured in the music of so many of his contemporaries. It is also less demanding music than performers of Enescu are used to, but it is carefully structured and crafted for all that.
