Piece for Piano ('Hommage à Gabriel Fauré')Year: 1922
Genre: Other Keyboard
Pr. Instrument: Piano
Early in 1922 the journal Revue Musicale announced that it would produce a special issue in October that year to celebrate the life and works of Gabriel Fauré. As part of the issue, the Revue would commission and publish short piano pieces from seven of the master's former pupils (Aubert, Enescu, Koechlin, Ladmirault, Ravel, Roger-Ducasse and Schmitt), each of which was to be based on the notes represented by the dedicatee's name. Enescu's contribution is the briefest, amounting to only some ten bars, but this is a piece of innovative genius. Within its miniscule frame the requisite sequence of notes is repeated no less than twelve times, but with such ingenuity in the harmonic and rhythmic shifts of the music that none but the most bat-like of listeners could unravel the intricate threads.
