The first whole work to emerge after the completion of Oedipe, the Third Piano Sonata is a bright neo-classical piece of fast-paced and frenetic activity backed by a lyrical and jovial melodic line. The central movement is worthy of special note, since it serves as an excellent example of Enescu's ability to manipulate and transmogrify a folk idiom in an utterly distinctive style.

The sonata is dedicated to Marcel Ciampi, with whom Enescu had a long performing relationship and who gave the work its première in Paris in 1938.
