  • Gib dich zufrieden und sei stille, BWV511
    Year: 1725
Genre: Solo Song / Lied / Chanson
    Pr. Instrument: Voice
Based on the hymn "Gib dich zufrieden und sei stille" (Fret not, my soul, on God rely), by Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676), this song for voice and continuo appears in at least two versions. Compared to the version in hymn-book edited by Georg Christian Schemelli, the melody in the Clavier-Büchlein for Anna Magdalena Bach is simpler. Like the other vocal entries in this collection dedicated to his wife, this song exemplifies Bach's profound belief that music can console the despairing soul.
