  • Land of the Mountain & the Flood, overture for orchestra, Op.3
    Year: 1887

This work is a direct and uncomplicated concert overture evocative of some rugged landscape in Scotland. Low strings begin with a sparsely and tellingly punctuated statement of the idea that generates all of the work's thematic material. It is rich with Scotch snaps and other dotted-rhythmed figures, rugged in its opening form, glidingly lyrical in its inversion. During the course of the work it is played in varying instrumentations and taken apart motivically. There is no complicated development, only obvious joy in the simplicity and directness of the soundscape in which all instruments have their moments to shine. Trumpets lead one arrestingly majestic section, and crashing cymbals help drive the work to its exultant conclusion.
