Musicology (work in progress):
A "son" in Mexican parlance refers to what we call mariachi music; it means both the piece of music itself and the band. "Sones" is the plural. (Mariachi is a particular type of regional folk music, played by a strolling band using a regular and a very large guitar, violins, and trumpets.) In explaining the name, we've virtually described the intent of this highly popular and very attractive short orchestral work by a leading Mexican composer. The piece is a succession of catchy and spicy tunes in mariachi style and rhythm, attractively set for orchestra with expanded local percussion. Highly entertaining listening. -
