Musicology:
Goldmark was one of the most popular of composers based in Vienna at the same time as his friend Johannes Brahms. This brilliant overture is one of his best known works, and remained in the repertory even when Goldmark's music as a whole fell out of favor during the twentieth century. Brahms and Goldmark made many trips to Italy together, starting in 1878. In 1903 Goldmark returned to Italy (Brahms was now deceased) to receive honorary membership in the prestigious Accademia di Santa Cecilia. For the occasion he wrote, in 1903 this colorful overture. Although it was pretty much out of date in style when it was premiered, it was still happily accepted by the audience for its light mood, exceptional orchestration, and attractive Italian-style tunes and melodies.

In Italien, Op.49Key: Eb
Year: 1904
Genre: Overture
Pr. Instrument: Orchestra
This is a cheery tourist's view of Italy, flooded with sparkling sunlight. First, a carnival with street dances, then a more gentle, lyrical dance. The tempo slows for a romantic meeting under moonlight, then builds up again for a final burst of Italian sun.
