Musicology (work in progress):
The title of this tone poem (the first composition by Revueltas to gain international fame) is an old name for the resort town of Cuernavaca in an Indian language. Revueltas cautions that the music is "without tourism." It contains many "nationalistic" instruments in the percussion. As in most pieces of the composer, it contains sections with different simultaneous streams of music in different keys. Cuahnhuac is vigorous and exciting, and depicts a scene of Mexico in touch with its ancient past. -
