Musicology:
Dedicated to "Bruno Walter in admiration and friendship", the third quartet is a far more introverted work then the former two. The musical language is more fluid and eloquent and much of the thematic material comes from the composer's movie scores, in particular The Sea Wolf. Korngold drew no qualitative distinction between his orchestral oeuvre and his output for the movies and drew on each for inspiration and material throughout his life. This quartet is worthy of note primarily for being the first work of his late period and is marked by considerable elegance in both structure and technique. Chromatic and dissonant in places, in others it is lyrical and warm.
