This sonata and its companion, La Sultane, are commonly grouped with four early sonatas thought to have been written in 1692. Authorities think these two date from 1695 (some say considerably later in the case of La Sultane). This sonata is, therefore, one of the earliest of French trio sonatas in the Italian fashion. The title means "The Proud One" (in feminine gender), an idea reflected in the stately opening movement. It is written for two violins, bass viol, and continuo, the viol giving it an uncommon richness. While the formal outline of the work is that of the Italian sonata da chiesa (slow-fast-slow-fast), the elegant style of the music is French, especially in the third-movement aire.
