Musicology:
The fact that his post as Master of the Queen's music required the production of numerous fanfares likely inspired Arthur Bliss to cast each one differently. In this minute-and-a-half work, Bliss handles the trumpets, trombones and horns antiphonally, the tuba and percussion underlining the stately drama. Considering that this is a pièce d'occasion—which generally implies music of uncomplicated, direct appeal—Bliss is more harmonically adventurous than might be expected. -
