  • Froissart, concert overture, Op.19
    Year: 1890-1901
    Genre: Overture
    Pr. Instrument: Orchestra

The earliest of Elgar's three concert overtures is an evocation of the time of chivalry as evidenced by the quotation of Keats that precedes the score: "When chivalry lifted up her lance on high". The title of the work refers to Jean Froissart, a 14th century French writer whose romances described the chivalrous feelings of the time. The work was commissioned by the Worcester Festival Committee for the 1890 Three Choir Festival, and it shows the composer at his most brilliant and extroverted. It opens and close in grandiose mode, and its middle section includes an unforgettably beautiful tune. A very satisfactory piece that already shows Elgar's style in all its vitality.
