Musicology:
This light song (the title means "Scaramella goes to the war") sounds as though it was either derived from composed as a game song. The nonsense syllables of the refrain and the words add to this impression. Scaramella, also known as Scaramouche, is a stock figure of early comedies. He is usually a dandy and braggart, though at heart extremely cowardly.

Scaramella va alla guerra (a4)Year: ca. 1475-1520
Genre: Other Secular Polyphony
Pr. Instrument: Chorus/Choir
"Scaramella goes to the war," the text begins, "with his lance and buckler. La zombero boro borombetta, la boro borombo. Scaramella is all dressed up, with his shoes and his leggings. La zombero boro borombetta, la boro borombo." The song continues with several verses, each showing Scaramella engaging on some new activity. It seems most likely that the singers or dancers acted out some new gesture with each verse.
