Debussy's Hommage à Joseph Haydn (1909) was written for a collection published by the Société Internationale de Musique to mark the centenary of the Austrian master's death. The musical material is adapted from a series of notes based on the letters of Haydn's name (B-A-D-D-G, in French nomenclature). This motive is set in four different ways as a sort of series of variations. Though the Hommage remains a relative obscurity among Debussy's keyboard works, it is an imaginative and clever contribution to the piano literature.
