Like the other organ works from this period, this too was an exercise written for Brahms' counterpoint studies with Joseph Joachim. Although fairly derivative of Bach in style and technique, the work as a whole has a Brahmsian quality about its harmonies and sonorities. The Prelude is an extended toccata-like movement, both virtuosic and dramatic. The Fugue is less interesting, but has some complex rhythmic subtleties. Discovered long after Brahms' death, this work was surely not intended for publication.
