This set is actually a collection of miscellaneous piano miniatures from 1865-1879. The first four untitled pieces are unusually simple in texture and technique, even more so than the Consolations S172. The fifth, titled "Sospiri," similar in mood and texture to the Consolations, is nearly twice as long as the others and somewhat more elaborate in texture and form. All five are in slow tempos and lyrical, but the extreme brevity and uncharacteristically thin texture of the first four suggests that they may have been sketches. The absence of program titles, a true rarity in Liszt, further suggests that Liszt may not have considered them finished. This is borne out by the fact that they were notrpublished in his lifetime.
