Wand of Youth, Suite No.2, Op.1bYear: 1908
Genre: Suite / Partita
Pr. Instrument: Orchestra
- 1.March
- 2.Little bells
- 3.Moths and Butterflies
- 4.Fountain dance
- 5.The tame bear
- 6.The wild bears
Both suites (1 and 2) were recreated by Elgar in later life from a set
of piano pieces he wrote to entertain children. The first has seven
movements and the second six, all with fairy tale titles. The music is no
longer intended specifically for children, but magically recaptures the
innnocence of childhood nearly 40 years after it was first written.
Most of the pieces are tender and nostalgic, with light, touching
melodies, though there is typical Elgarian boistrousness in the final movements of both suites: "Fairies
and Giants" (Suite 1) and "Wild Bears" (Suite 2).
