Rosemary ('That's for remembrance. Douce pensée')Year: 1915
Genre: Other Orchestral
Pr. Instrument: Orchestra
In 1882, a time at which the young Elgar was music director of the Powick Lunatic Asylum, he wrote a three-minute piano piece called "Danse Pensée". He orchestrated it in 1915 under the name "Rosemary". The piece is essentially a waltz, although the rhythm under the surface is more complex. After an initial declamatory opening by the orchestra, the waltz itself begins in a soft tone. Although it goes through a number of moods, it remains subdued. At its closing moments, the rhythm slows down to a standstill.
