Musicology:
La cena delle beffe, or The Supper of Jests, is the final opera written by Italian composer Umberto Giordano. The four-act drama was created out of a play by Sem Benelli. Its setting is fifteenth century Florence, during the reign of Lorenzo the Magnificent. The strife between the supper guests and the type of jests played on them make up the body of the action of the opera. Political and social intrigue, including torture, murder, and a love feud eventually result in the madness of one of the main characters, and the murder of another. Although Giordano is known most as the composer of Andrea Chenier, the dramatic power of the work has caused it to be revived several times since its premiere. Highlights of the score are Ginevra's "Sempre cosi sul margine del sogno," which is prefigured by music earlier in the act, and a Tuscan minstrel song that sets up the tragic ending. -
