Mikayel Balyan

Mikayel Balyan was born in Yerevan, Armenia in 1981, and began his musical training at age 5 at the Yerevan Tchaikovsky School of Music, studying under E. Tandilyan. In 1993, Mikayel moved to Moscow and entered the Gnessin College of Music, studying piano with E. Ivanova until 1998. His education continued at the Musikhochschule in Basel, Switzerland, where he studied with Professor Rudolkf Buchbinder, and received his Concert Diploma in 2004. He is currently a piano student at the Fokwang-Hochschule in Essen, Germany, where he is working with Professor Michael Roll.

Among the awards Mikayel has won thus far include 2nd Prize at the International Youth Assembly of Arts Competition (Moscow, 1991). He has participated in numerous music festivals - including at Colmar, France (1997), Oxford, England (2002), and Davos, Switzerland (2003). Mikayel has toured through much of Western Europe, and has given concerts in Armenia, Russia, and elsewhere, with several orchestras, including the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Virtuosi of Moscow Chamber Orchestra. More recently, Mikayel toured with the Arsika Trio (featuring Classical Archives artist Aram Talalyan on cello) to South America.
