Mikhail Utkin

Honored Artist and People's Artist of Russia, Mikhail Utkin was born in Lithuania in 1952. He graduated from the Moscow Central Music School in the class of Prof. S.Kalianov, and was an honors graduate of the Moscow Conservatory in the Class of Prof. M.Rostropovich.

In 1967, Utkin won First Prize in the Prague International Radio Youth Competition, and Second Prize at the International String Quartet Competition in Liège (Belgium) as a member of the Moscow Conservatory String Quartet. The following year, he won First Prize as a member of the Moscow Piano Trio at the Interforum Competition in Budapest, and, as soloist, was awarded the Maurice Ravel Gold Medal at the May Music Festival in Bordeaux.

Utkin has appeared as soloist in the major cities of Russia, France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan, Brazil, Argentina, and the USA. He has performed with the National Orchestra of Spain, Prague Radio Orchestra, Moscow State Philharmonic, Gewandhaus, Berlin Radio, RAI Naples, and RTV Ljubljana Orchestras, and with the Metropolitan Orchestra of Lisbon, among others.

Utkin has appeared under the batons of G.Blumhagen, C-P.Flohr, R.Hanell, L.Herbig, and K.Mazur (Germany); R.Freisitzer (Austria); R.Klopfenstein (Switzerland), M.Horvat and A.Nanut (Slovenia); R.Frubeck de Burgos (Spain); M.Graca Moura (Portugal); P.Capolongo (France), J.Domarkas and S.Sondeckis (Lithuania); E.Klas (Estonia); V.Fedosejec, I.Gusman, V.Sinajsky, and R.Martynov (Russia); and D.Burkh and S.Muni (USA). Mikhail Utkin was also Principal Cellist of the Moscow Orchestra from 1995 to 1997.

In his chamber music activities, he has worked with such prominent ensembles as the Vilnius String Quartet, Moscow Quartet of Ancient Music, Quintet Baroque, and others. As a member of the Moscow Piano Trio since 1974, Utkin has toured to the USA, France, Germany, UK, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Hungary, Austria, Poland, Macedonia, Japan, South Korea, and Brazil.

Professor of Cello at the Moscow Conservatory from 1978 to 1988, Mikhail Utkin has led master classes in Germany, Switzerland, Finland, and the USA.
