Irina Chukovsky

Irina Chukovsky was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, to a family of musicians. She gave her first performance as soloist with orchestra at the age of seven, and her first full recital at thirteen. After studying in Moscow at the Central Music School, Chukovsky attended the Moscow Conservatory in the classes of Professors V.Gornostaeva and S.Neuhaus. She undertook her doctoral studies in the class of Professor Dmitry Bashkirov. In 1980, Ms. Chukovsky was a prizewinner in the Frédéric Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw.

She has appeared as soloist with the Moscow and St. Petersburg Philarmonics, the Moscow State Symphony, the Tashkent, Sverdlovsk, Yalta, Gorky, and Kharkov Philarmonics, and the Seasons Chamber Orchestra.

Ms. Chukovsky made her American debut in 1991 as soloist with the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra, Maxim Shostakovich conducting, and has also appeared with the Greenwich and Ridgefield (CT) Symphonies.

She has performed over 400 recitals in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev, Tashkent, and Sverdlovsk, including regular appearances at the Moscow Conservatory and the Scriabin Museum. Chukovsky has also performed at the Polish Culture Center and appeared on special events such as the Grand Finale Concert of the 1997 Moscow Autumn Composers Festival, the Moscow Conservatory's 1996 Dmitri Shostakovich Birthday Celebration, and the Pushkin Museum's Sviatoslav Richter Festival the same year. Her international touring has included visits to Italy, Yugoslavia, South Korea, and, under the auspices of Columbia Artists, the USA.

Irina Chukovsky is presently a soloist with the Moscow Philarmonic Society, and teaches at the Moscow Conservatory and the Gnessin Academy of Music. She has given master classes throughout Russia, and in Greece, South Korea, and the USA.

"Her performance was as lyrical and electrifying as it was virtuostic. In her solo recitals and other concerts with American artists, she continues to mesmerize her audiences. Ms. Chukovsky is truly a remarkable pianist."

Maxim Shostakovich

"Her particular virtuosity is in the realm of lyricism and agility...and Ms. Chukovsky possesses a wonderful differentiation of tone-colors and touches. This was virtuoso playing of a very high order indeed."

NHCC Concert Review (USA)

"Most audiences are thrilled by the kind of playing that technical virtuosity permits, but only a performing artist's spiritual involvement can electrify listeners through an experience that goes far beyond merely being dazzled. That sort of musical communication happened Saturday evening with Ms. Chukovsky's remarkable technical skills, polished to the point of art that conceals art."

Journal Press, Ridgefield, CT (USA)

"Her playing was at once fiery, passionate, and dreamy. My sense is that one of her secrets is a rich personality imbued with fidelity and integrity."

Greenwich News, CT (USA)
