Peter Dmitriev

Peter Dmitriev was born in 1974 in Moscow, into a family of professional musicians. He began piano studies at the age of five under local teachers, A.D.Artobolevskaya and later A.S.Sumbatyan. At the age of seven, Dmitriev was admitted into the Central School of the P.I.Tchaikovsky Moscow Conservatory, where he first studied with A.Bakulov; within a year, the young pianist had appeared with the school orchestra in concertos by Haydn and Beethoven. In 1990, Dmitriev was admitted into the class of L.N.Naumov, the "heir and exponent" of the Russian piano school tradition. He graduated in 1998, and then in 2000 completed post-diploma work as an assistant to Professor Naumov.

While still a student, Dmitriev took First Prize and several special prizes at the Sixth International Music Competition in Tokyo (1995). His performance at the competition sparked considerable media attention, highlighted by a television spotlight on NHK, the largest television network in Japan. NHK likewise issued Dmitriev's first commercial CD, which received rave reviews in the Japanese press.

The success at the Tokyo competition enabled Dmitriev to undertake performances with such prestigious orchestras as the Tokyo Philharmonic, the Zagrem Philharmonic, and the Moscow Radio Symphony; he was thereby able to work with such accomplished conductors as K.Akiyama, M.Eichenholz, and V.Feoseyev.

Dmitriev has thus far recorded CDs for the Bohème (BMR), Fontec, and Arte Nova Classics (BMG) labels - for which he made three recordings of Prokofiev sonatas (two of which are featured here in the Classical Archives). He frequently gives recitals throughout Russia, as well as in Europe, China, and South America.

"[Dmitriev's] poetic gift is supported by a clear and fierce pulse, which fills his performance with energy and maintains a high level of interest within the audience."

Japan Times

"Technically above reproach, [Dmitriev's] playing is dynamic and sufficiently lyrical; everything is natural, without eccentricity, and the intonation of passages is very lively. Such harmony of intellect and emotional expression is, seemingly, traditional to the Russian school of piano."

The Japan Music Journal

"The talent of this young pianist is major... the musician displays great temperament, has an excellent feel for form, and exercises a sure command over the palette of sound. He has shown himself to be a master, and an enfant terrible... Without doubt, a new, bright star has appeared in our sky."

Culture (Russia)

"Even the most blasé connoisseurs of piano music were amazed by the talent of the young soloist, Peter Dmitriev. His technique was distinguished by crystalline clarity, which made Rachmaninov's broad sweep sound with a purity equal to Mozart. When the composition drew to its scintillating finale, everyone felt that something extraordinary was taking place, something spellbinding, that the profound and deeply sensitive pianist was producing a true work of art."
