Aram Talalyan

Aram Talalyan was born in Yerevan, Armenia, and began his formal cello studies at the Tchaikovsky Music School—principally with Armen Mesropian. Upon graduation, Mr. Talalyan moved to the United States, where he completed his undergraduate degree at the Longy School of Music in Boston, studying with David Finch, the principal cellist of the Boston Pops. Then in 1991, he enrolled in Yale University, studying with Aldo Parisot, receiving his Masters Degree (1993) and Artists Diploma (1995).

Mr. Talalyan has received awards from various international cello competitions, including the Markneukirchen International Competition (East Germany, 1983), the All-Soviet Union Cello Competition (1988), and the Yale University Competition (1993). Among his engagements to date include principal cellist of the New West Symphony (1995-1997), as the cellist of the Komitas State String Quartet, as well as a participant in several music festivals—including the Madison Festival of Music (founding member, 1995-97) and the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival. Mr. Talalyan has toured through much of the United States, Eastern Europe, and the Soviet Union. He is currently Assistant Professor of chamber music, cello, and Early Music at Yerevan State Conservatory (Armenia).

In these recordings, Mr. Talalyan is accompanied by pianist Zaruhi Khanjian. Ms. Khanjian is a graduate of the Armenian State Conservatory (1992), where she studied with Svetlana Navasardian, and then received her postgraduate degree from Moscow Conservatory, studying with Vera Gornostayeva. She tours regularly through Europe and the former Soviet Union, and is currently Professor of piano and chamber music at the Armenian State Conservatory.
