Ivan Monighetti

Ivan Monighetti was born in Riga, Latvia in 1948, and studied cello with the legendary Mstislav Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatory. After winning awards at several international competitions, Monighetti began touring Europe and the US as a soloist with world-class orchestras - including the Berlin Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and RAI Turin; and under such leading conductors as M.Rostropovich, Kurt Masur, and Krzysztof Penderecki.

Monighetti's repertory is quite vast, including the standards of the classical-romantic repertories as well as a wealth of contemporary cello works. Indeed, he has forged intensive artistic friendships with such modern composers as Penderecki, Edisson Denisov, and Valentin Silvestrov. He has appeared as a soloist in contemporary music festivals in Berlin, Amsterdam, Mexico City, London, Moscow, Stockholm, and Warsaw. In addition, Monighetti has focused on "ancient" music and the use of authentic instruments - seen here in his recordings of the Boccherini Cello Concertos and the Cello Suites of J.S. Bach - which won the 2003 Frederic Prize. His interest in Baroque music then led him to found the Camerata Boccherini, and to organize and direct the Moscow Festival of Ancient Music, from 1987.

Monighetti has been the focus of several television programs for Swiss TV, and has recorded for Erato, Harmonia Mundi, Chant du Monde, and other labels. He is currently professor of cello at the Basle Academy of Music in Switzerland, and is a guest professor at the Moscow Conservatory and the Reina Sofia Music High School in Madrid. He has been a jury member of prestigious competitions such as the J.S.Bach competition in Leipzig, and has given Master Classes around the world.
