Vladimir Tonkha

Vladimir Tonkha is a professor, of the Russian Gnessins Academy of Music, and head of the cello department, he regularly gives master-classes in Russia and abroad and is the president of many performing competitions. He is also well known-as the organizer of cello music festivals. He is active as a teacher and consultant within the framework of the International, Charity program "New Names" (opened through his direct participation). He presided the judge panel for the cello section of the First All-Russian Open Competition "New. Names", in January 2000.

Tonkha's solo and chamber music repertoire extends from the music of the Middle Ages to the present day. More than 50 compositions have been written especially for him by famous composers such as S. GuhaJdulina, Y. Takahashi, M. Meyhaud, R. Gabichvadze, K. Volkov, M. Broriner, M. Clark, M. Gagnidze, D. Kramer, V. Kalistratov, V. Ryabov, V. Suslin, S. Beririsky etc. He has "given countless Russian and world premiers, such as "cello works by G. de Machaut, G. lsac, A. Webern, P. Hindemith, A. Schnitfce; E. Dehisov, S. Gubaidulina.

Audiences from the great halls, of the world, such as Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Santory-Hall, Casals-Hall (Tokyo). Gewandhaus (Leipzig), Cologne Philharmonia Hall, Budapest Music Academy, Helsinky Philharmonia, Moscow Conservatory, have applauded his. skill as a performer. He is always a great success during the biggest international festivals - Boston, Tokyo. Torino, Lockenhaus. Amsterdam, Huddersfield; tours to the USA, Great Britain, Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain.

Critics from around the world have referred to his particular sound world, virtuosity, temperament, and his persuasive interpretations. All these aspects of his playing give the audience a sense of involvement in his creative process. This exact atmosphere connects composer, performer and audience.

At various times Tonkha has played with G. Rozhdestvensky, G. Kremer, Y. Bashmet, F. Lips, Y. Takahashi, T. Grindehko, S. Snitkovsky, S. Goualda, E. Mozer, Borodin Quartet and other famous musicians and ensembles.

Among his many recordings is the only existing recording of the Piano Trio by E. Denisov, and his CD recording of "The Seven Last Words of Christ" - Gubaidulina (prize winning CD recording of 1991, "Gold Range/Diapason", France).

More then 200 musical compositions have been arranged by V. Tonkha and published by musical publishers in Russia, such as: "Russian Cello Music" (a series of teaching methods) and chamber music by Brahms. Ravel, Hindemith. Grechaninov, Denisov and others.

In 1993, professor Tonkha organized an unusual ensemble consisting of 4 cellos -The Moscow Cello Quartet. Their programs include styles from ancient music to the contemporary and jazz music. More than 30 compositions by famous Russian and foreign composers have been written for this quartet. They tour successfully to Russia, Germany and France. Critics note their novel and unusual programming, and high ensemble skills. Especially interesting is the variety of ensembles offerred (from one to four cellos) within one concert, and according to one critic, this makes their concerts absorbing "cello spectaculars".
