Edvard Mik'aeli Mirzoyan

Edvard Mirzoyan was born in 1921 in Gory, Georgia into a family of musicians - his father, Mikhail, was a well-known musical pedagogue in Tbilisi, Georgia. Edvard began his formal music education in Yerevan, Armenia at the A-I. Spendiarov Music School, where he began composing at the age of 12. In 1939, Mr. Mirzoyan entered the Yerevan State Komitas Conservatory, studying composition with Professor V. Talyan. Upon graduation, he moved to Moscow and continued his music studies at the Armenian Cultural House - at which point he composed the String Quartet "Theme and Variations" found here at the Classical Archives.

Following his studies, Mr. Mirzoyan began an active career as a composer, achieving considerable notoriety in Armenia, as well as throughout the Soviet Union. He is the author of numerous symphonic, chamber, vocal, and piano works, as well as music for the cinema. Among his most celebrated works are those found here at the Classical Archives - including the Symphony for Strings and Timpani, his Cello Sonata, and the piano work, Album for my Granddaughter.

Beyond his work as a composer, Mr. Mirzoyan has been an active member of the Armenian music scene, having served as President of the Armenian Union of Composers and Musicologists 1956 to 1991. In addition, he has served as a professor of composition at Yerevan State Komitas Conservatory. Among his former students at the Conservatory include Hrachya Melikyan and Avet Terteryan, both of whom have music featured here at the Classical Archives. We are delighted to feature the music of this distinguished composer.
