Georgy Dmitriev

Georgy Dmitriev was born in 1942 in Krasnodar, Russia and began composing at a very early age. He attended the music college in Krasnodar, studying piano, theory and composition from 1958 to 1961. On the recommendation of Dmitry Shostakovich, Dmitriev entered the Moscow State Conservatory where he studied with Dmitry Kabalevsky. In the years following graduation in 1968, Dmitriev pursued a dual career as educator and composer, teaching at the Gnessin State Musical Pedagogical Institute and the central school of the Moscow Conservatory; his academic publications include a treatise on percussion instruments and a study of orchestration.

Dmitriev's reputation as a composer began to grow following the creation of the Moscow Autumn festival in 1979, wherein he premiered a number of works for orchestra, voices, and chamber ensembles. After working for the Moscow branch of the Composers' Union of the USSR, he established, in 1989, the Composers' Union of Moscow, which organized a number of music festivals - including several featuring Orthodox choral music, until then forbidden. He also championed works by European composers whose music had been largely repressed, including Xenakis, Stockhausen, Berio, and others. Dmitriev later became the chairman of the International Association of Composers (CIS), in 1992, and then the Russian Musical Society, which promoted greater public contact with modern music. He has won a number of awards for his works at various international competitions, including in Budapest (1988) and Trent (1991) His works have been performed throughout Russia and abroad, and are published by several leading companies. A number of his works have been recorded on CD - many of which are featured here at the Classical Archives. His works have been linked with the religious and philosophical traditions of Russian culture, tempered by openness to modern achievements. His vocal works in particular have been praised by virtue of his command of Russian intonation and expressiveness - as heard in such works as his All-Night Vigil.
