Walter Hus

Water Hus was born in Mol, Belgium and attended the Conservatories of both Ghent and Brussels. He studied piano with Prof. Robert Steyaert and graduated with honors in 1984. Soon thereafter he began an active career as a pianist-improviser, where he freely combined elements of classical, jazz, and popular music; in addition, Mr. Hus has collaborated with artists of other media, including painters and video artists. He formed and toured extensively with his group Maximilist.

Since 1990, Mr. Hus has focused more intensely on composition. He has produced music for the concert hall as well as for theater, ballet and film ("Sweet Sixteen", "The Pillow Book"). He has received commissions from a number of festivals and institutions, particularly in his native Belgium - including the Kaaitheater, DeSingel, the Beursschouburg, and Antwerpen '93. He has written a trilogy of operas with librettist Jan Decorte (Meneer, de zot & tkint / Bloetwollefduivel / Titus Andonderonikustmijnklote), which recently toured Belgium and elsewhere in Europe to wide acclaim. His other works include four string quartets and their symphonic transcriptions, a violin and piano concerto, two song cycles, a children's opera (de Nacht), a full opera (Orfeo), and various works for chamber ensemble, voice, and choir. Mr. Hus is currently completing a cycle of 24 Preludes and Fugues in 4 volumes for various combinations of instruments—some of which are found here at the Classical Archives.
