Vadim Larchikov

Vadim Larchikov was born in Sevastopol, Ukraine in 1967, and graduated from the Odessa Academy of Music in both cello performance (1993) and composition (1994). Following graduation, he pursued private master-classes with Y.Chiffoleau (cello), P.-L.Aimard (chamber ensemble), E.H.Flammer, R.Platz, and F.Donatoni (composition), among others. Since 2002, he has been working on his Ph.D. in Composition at the National Music Academy of Ukraine, under Professor Y.Stankovych.

Mr. Larchikov has won honours at more than twenty international music competitions, both in composition and cello performance - in Albania, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Italy, Sweden, Ukraine, and the US. His works have been performed by such outstanding ensembles as the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, the Odessa, Rivne and Zaporozhye Philharmonic Orchestras (Ukraine), the De Ereprijs Orchestra (Netherlands), the Ensemble für Neue Musik Zürich (Switzerland), the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble (Russia), the Musicattuale Ensemble (Italy), and the Nodus Ensemble (US); as well as by conductors P.Fournillier (France), P.Tovstukha, and V.Runchak (Ukraine); and soloists such as pianists K.Wieringa (Netherlands), M.Dubov (Russia), and N.Butkute (Lithuania), guitarists M.Andersson (Sweden) and J.Ruck (Germany), bassoonist S.Kacionas (Lithuania), and others.

Mr. Larchikov conceives his music as philosophical or spiritual essays in tone, "where the intonation, dynamics, timbre, or any other element of the music bears its symbolic meaning and semantic function." Meditative moments in his music are often juxtaposed against expressionistic emotional explosions, often obtained through the use of a microtonal musical language.

Beyond his work as a composer, Mr. Larchikov performs regularly with two chamber groups, both of which are likewise featured here at the Classical Archives: Duo Violoncellissimo and The Frescos Contemporary Music Ensemble. In addition, he is a lecturer at the Odessa Academy of Music and the Artistic Director of the Musica Humana and Baroque & Avant-garde International Music Festivals (Ukraine, 2000). He has appeared as a composer and cellist on ten CDs, and has appeared in concerts and festivals in 16 European countries, as well as in Japan, Mexico, Mongolia, and the US. He has even extended his interest into musicology, with the article "The New Cello. Interpretation of the Instrument by Late-20th Century Composers: New Aesthetics, New Languages, New Techniques". Clearly, Vadim Larchikov is an industrious and talented musician, and we are very pleased to feature him here at the Classical Archives.
