Marina Shmotova

Marina Shmotova was born in the city of Irkutsk, in Central Siberia, in 1959, and began her musical studies at age six. At an early age she left Irkutsk for Moscow, studying composition at the Gnessin Music Academy under Professor N.Peiko, eventually becoming his assistant. She later studied composition with Sergey Berinsky, who became a sort of musical mentor. Shmotova is an active member of the contemporary Russian music scene, participating in numerous festivals in Russia and elsewhere - such as the Festival Moscow-Autumn, the New Music Festival in Krasnoyarsk, the Ingeborg Bahmann Festival (Ghent, 1993), and the New Music in Brazil Festival (1993). She has been a member of the Russian Union of Composers since 1990. She has received recognition at several competitions, including the Sergei Prokofiev International Competition for Composers (1991).

Shmotova embraces various modes as a composer, ranging from traditional to avant-garde, although by her account she strictly avoids "unemotional" constructions. Among the stylistic influences to her works are the Second Viennese School, Minimalism, and the music of various generations of Moscow composers. She often writes for small ensembles, as seen in The Ballades of the White Sea for two flutes and bells. At the same time, she has written several works for orchestra or large chamber groups, such as Visions and her Double Concerto for Horn, Piano, and Strings - all of which are featured here at the Classical Archives. In each case, however, Shmotova avoids loudness, preferring to carefully cultivate a "sound," usually expressed melodically regardless of the stylistic complexity.

Reviews

"The surprisingly poetic music of Marina Shmotova remains in the audience's memory. Her work, The Ballades of the White Sea for two flutes and Valdayan bell startled with its freshness, clearness, evocation of images, and in its ability to convey the chaste natural beauty of the Russian North."
