Artem Vassiliev

Artem Vassiliev was born in Kazakhstan in 1974, and moved to Moscow as a young boy. In 1991 he entered the Gnessins Music College, where he studied composition with U.V.Vorontsov and later electro-acoustic music with A.I. Kisselev (whose music is likewise featured here at the Classical Archives.) In 1995 Artem entered the Moscow State Conservatory, where he continued his studies with Professor Vorntsov; he graduated in 2002. He then pursued a year of post-graduate work at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he completed a Masters Degree with distinction in 2002. He is currently teaching in the Sound Engineering Department at the Gnessin School, and pursuing a Ph.D. at the Royal Academy of Music, working with Brian Elias.

Among the awards earned by Artem thus far include the Russian President's Special Prize for young composers (2001), the Vladimir Potanin Scholarship for his studies in London (2001), the Pullen Memorial Prize (2002), and the Mosco Carner Award from the Royal Academy of Music (2002-03). He joined the Russian Composers' Union in 2001. His works have been performed at several contemporary music festivals in Russia (the Moscow Autumn Festival), France, Great Britain (e.g. the Bath Music Festival, 2001), Holland (the Gaudeamus Festival), Switzerland, and the US (the Wired-Strings Festival, San Francisco, 2003). He has received commissions from several prestigious organizations, including the Cologne Sinfonietta (Germany), New London Singers (UK), and Paul Dresher Electroacoustic Band (USA).

Artem composes in both traditional and electro-acoustic media. As the selections here demonstrate, they range from small chamber works to larger orchestral pieces, as well as choral works. His works have been recorded on CDs released by BMG, Black Box Music, Enzyme, and Electroshock Records.

Reviews

The Strad (Great Britain)

This piece encompassed conventional baroque violin figurations in a fresh guise..."
