Stockholm Saxophone Quartet

The Stockholm Saxophone Quartet was founded some 35 years ago, and has been in its present configuration - Sven Westerberg (soprano and tenor), Jörgen Petterson (soprano, alto, baritone), Leif Karlborg (tenor), Per Hedlund (baritone, bass) - for 20 years. Since its inception, the group has made a specialty of performing contemporary works, many of which have been written especially for them; indeed, over 400 works by Swedish and other composers have been written expressly for the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet.

The Quartet has performed in contemporary music festivals all over the world, including the ICSM World Music Days, The World Saxophone Days (Pesaro, Italy), the 9th International New Music Festival (Riga, Latvia), Expo 2000 (Hanover, Germany), New Music Indaba (South Africa), the Gobi Summer Academy (Mongolia), and many others. They have likewise performed in concerts throughout Europe (particularly in Sweden), the Middle East, Russia, China, and the US. The Quartet holds a particularly close relationship with the Royal University College of Music in Stockholm, where it is able to test and develop ideas with composition teachers and students alike - including varied experiments with electro-acoustic techniques.

The Quartet has won numerous awards and fellowships from the Swedish music community, and has appeared on several recordings. We are pleased to feature this innovative chamber music ensemble here at the Classical Archives.
