Stephen L. Martin developed an interest in composition at about the age of five, initially through improvisation at the piano before he could read music fluently. His parents, themselves amateur musicians, encouraged his musical interests. During his early teens he became fascinated with the guitar and for a time also played saxophone, while singing both as a soloist and as a member of choirs. By his mid-teens he had set aside his other hobbies to pursue classical music seriously.

Composition has remained a central part of Martin’s musical life, driven by a continuing interest in harmony, sonority, and the craft of writing music. His earliest improvisations were already shaped by an attraction to particular keys, chords, and intervals, including the tritone. He has described composing as an enduring process of exploration and learning, with the response of listeners providing encouragement to continue developing and refining his work.

My interest in composition began when I was about five. I loved to 'play' on the piano - mainly improvisation as I couldn't read notes well. I remember I was always attracted to particular keys and chords, the mysterious tri-tone among others. This was encouraged much by my parents who were, themselves, amateur musicians.

Entering a period of fascination with the guitar in my early teens — due in part to its popularity with that age group (and, for a brief time, playing the saxophone) — I was throughout an avid singer, performing both as a soloist and choral member. It wasn't until my mid teens that I dropped all my other hobbies and pursued classical music in earnest. It has since then been an ever-present fixture of my life. Though I am probably not a great composer, I have an unquenchable thirst to compose and to learn more about composition. I am sincerely grateful for those who find enjoyment in the results of my efforts and I'll work at providing new, and hopefully better pieces here.
