Isaac Albéniz (1860-1909); ESP

Isaac Albéniz (1860–1909) was a Spanish pianist and composer whose music played a central role in the emergence of a distinctively Spanish school of composition. Born in Camprodon, Catalonia, he was a child prodigy who gave public piano performances from an early age and later studied in several European musical centers, including Leipzig and Brussels. His career as a virtuoso pianist took him widely through Europe and brought him into contact with leading musicians and composers of his time. During the 1880s he increasingly turned toward composition, drawing inspiration from the landscapes, dances, songs, and regional traditions of Spain. He eventually settled for periods in London and Paris, where he became closely associated with French musical life and absorbed elements of the harmonic language that would later be identified with Impressionism. Albéniz died near the French Pyrenees in 1909, leaving a body of music that profoundly influenced the development of Spanish art music.

Albéniz is remembered above all for his piano music, in which Spanish rhythms and melodic inflections are transformed through sophisticated harmony, color, and keyboard writing. Early collections such as Suite española include some of his most enduring pieces, notably Asturias (Leyenda), Sevilla, and Granada. His mature masterpiece is Iberia, a set of twelve demanding piano pieces composed between 1905 and 1908 that evokes regions, cities, dances, and atmospheres of Spain with exceptional rhythmic complexity and harmonic richness. Other important piano works include España, Cantos de España, and La Vega. Although his output also includes orchestral music, songs, and stage works, it is through his piano music that Albéniz exerted his greatest influence, helping to establish a musical language that inspired later Spanish composers while also contributing to the broader development of early twentieth-century European music.

Money-Coutts (Lord Latymer) he set 3 opera libs., Henry Clifford (Barcelona 1895), Merlin, and Pepita Jiménez (Barcelona 1896). Settled in Paris 1893, being influenced by Fauré and Dukas. His Iberia, 12 pf. pieces, was pubd. in 4 vols., 1906-9. Also wrote operettas, songs, orch. rhapsody Catalonia, pf. conc., and 5 pf. sonatas. Iberia was orch. by Arbós, and Suite española by R.Frühbeck de Burgos.
