Gilles Binchois (c. 1400–1460), also known as Gilles de Bins, was a Franco-Flemish composer and one of the leading musicians of the early Renaissance. Probably born in Mons in the county of Hainaut, he was the son of a civic official and may initially have pursued a military career. By the late 1420s he had entered the service of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, whose court was among the most brilliant cultural centers of fifteenth-century Europe. Binchois served there for many years as singer, composer, and chaplain, working within the same musical environment as Guillaume Dufay. Although he never attained high ecclesiastical office, he received several church benefices and spent his later years at Soignies, where he died in 1460. His contemporaries held him in exceptional esteem, and his music circulated widely in manuscripts throughout Europe.
Binchois was especially celebrated for his secular chansons, whose graceful melodies, clear textures, and subtle rhythmic flexibility helped define the Burgundian style. Most are three-voice settings of courtly French poetry in formes fixes such as the rondeau and ballade; notable examples include De plus en plus, Triste plaisir, and Adieu m'amour. He also composed sacred music, including Mass movements, Magnificats, hymns, and motets, though fewer of these works survive. Compared with the greater contrapuntal complexity of some contemporaries, Binchois often favored an immediately expressive upper melody supported by relatively simple lower voices, a style closely connected with the cultivated song tradition of the Burgundian court. Together with Dufay, he helped establish the musical language that linked late medieval practice with the emerging Renaissance, and his chansons remained admired and imitated long after his death.
